Beyond Food ~ Filing Tax Returns, Unlocking Stability

A vital service at Community Care Thorold continues to help some of our most vulnerable neighbours access the support they’re entitled to. Since 2017, the Year-Round Free Tax Clinic has been quietly transforming lives by ensuring individuals and families with moderate incomes receive the government benefits and tax credits they depend on. What began as a small initiative has grown into a trusted resource serving over 500 people every year across the Niagara region.

During the busiest months of March and April, two trained and compassionate volunteers meet with clients one-on-one to file returns and maximize support. But the work doesn’t stop there — the clinic continues throughout the year, providing help to those who need guidance or missed deadlines.

The impact of this service is far-reaching. The clinic helps individuals regain confidence, helping them feel seen and supported in what can be an overwhelming process.

“As a volunteer, I do this because I know how life-changing these benefits can be. Some people come in not knowing they’re eligible for anything. It’s incredibly rewarding to help them take that step forward.” Elaine D’Amico, Tax clinic volunteer extraordinaire
