For children entering JK all the way up to Grade 12, the Back to School program is one way we can help children feel proud, reduce stress and anxiety for the return to school. The program has been running for more than 15 years and each year, grows in need and support.
Something that many don’t know is just how we manage the distribution process for the high volume of children we support. In 2025 we supported roughly 1700 students. Over the years there have been many adjustments, always with a view to improving the experience, the collection, coordination, and distribution. A few years ago, it was determined an offsite location, away from the primary food/clothing services; would be better for clients and staff. Similarly, the registration process for clients has changed over the years, the most recent being the use of an online booking program that allows clients to book a date/time to pick up their child(s) materials. This helps both clients and the team better manage the demands and volume of visits. The booking system also allows the team to know more about the children, including age and gender and size(s) of their shoe requirements. These two recent improvements are truly playing an important part in providing an effective program, with dignity and respect for the clients. As our team says, having our own space is a godsend, helping streamline the process, ensuring the food services are kept in optimal condition, while allowing clients ease to acquire their children’s materials.
Because of the Snacks & Sneakers program, in 2024 alone, 46% of kids ages 3–9 and 37% of youth ages 10–14, and 16% of youth ages 15-17 started the school year off in a positive manner.
Support for this program is provided through the generosity of donors like you and community partners. Every year we strive to raise funds to fully cover the direct costs of this program. Our recent Big Impact Backpacks helped raise over $18,000 bringing us closer to covering costs this year. Thank you! As costs have increased to an average of $100 per child to prepare for school, not including a new pair of sneakers, support is always needed for this program, and we appreciate your generosity.
